Summary: Photographs, taken by Leo Goldschmidt, of early Tucson and Florence, Arizona, from 1885 to about 1920. The images include the San Agustin Mission ruins, Bell Tower, and Grace Episcopal Church on Stone Avenue in Tucson, the La Campana Mine camp in Sonora, Mexico, and street scenes, a bar interior, a parade float, and a typing class in Florence, Arizona. There are also a few images of Ray, Sonora, and Pearce, Arizona and the Gila River. There are also photographs of family and friends including the Goldschmidt family, Grace Hamm, Brewster Cameron, the William Zeckendorf family, Mansfeld girls, Ruth Strauss, Harold Steinfeld (as a child with a goat), and Sing Woo (mowing the lawn at the Owls Club). There is also one image of Aguirre's ore teams (many teams of horse-drawn freight wagons).

Biographical note: Merchant and amateur photographer; Leo Goldschmidt emigrated to America from Germany, and arrived in Tucson in 1878. One sister, Mathilda married Aaron Zeckendorf; another sister married J.S. Mansfeld, both were merchant families in Tucson and New Mexico. Leo worked at the L. Zeckendorf store before opening his own furniture store. He sold his store in 1888 and, with E.N. Fish, operated the Eagle Flour Mill. From the description of Goldschmidt photograph collection...

Leo Goldschmidt was born September 15, 1852 in Hamburg, Germany, died January 25, 1944 in Tucson, Arizona. Goldschmidt came to the United States at the age of eighteen where he later became a successful businessman and amateur photographer. He began his business career in New Mexico with his brother, Adolf and moved to Tucson Arizona in 1878 where he opened a furniture store that later became the furniture department of the Zeckendorf and Steinfeld department stores.
